ON SCREEN TEXT: FRESH EMPIRE COM PLEX A title pops up. ON SCREEN TEXT: PRESENT THE NEW WAVE A neon green screen opens up to a warehouse, where a young artist wearing shades interviews as a crew prepares a photo set behind him. ON SCREEN TEXT: MARK BATTLES MARK BATTLES: Yeah. My name is Mark Battles. I'm from Indianapolis, Indiana. I'm a rapper, songwriter, producer. I think I stand out because I'm genuine, you know, the music is real. I just give 'em me. It's all about connecting with the fans on a personal level. My sophomore year, my brother passed away in a car accident. I wrote a song about that situation and about him, and that song really took off. He was always the one that encouraged me to rap, so it was just kinda... It felt like destiny to me that the person that encouraged me to rap, a song I made about him is what started my career. So that's when I focused on it fully. A photographer snaps photos of Mark Battles as the artist leans against a post. MARK BATTLES: I describe my sound as, as like a new wave hip-hop, but it has the roots of the, you know the older groups and acts. He interviews. MARK BATTLES: You know, 'cause I grew up on listening to Biggie and Eminem, Fifty Cent. Without sunglasses, he poses in a Fresh Empire sweatshirt. Then he interviews. MARK BATTLES: I choose to stay tobacco-free because I always felt like it was just my chance to break the chain with my grandmother smoking and my mom smoking. And you know, I just felt like, I didn't want to see my kids do that. And I didn't want to be the one that influenced them, so I decided to just completely stay away from it and be proud of the fact that I stay away from it. He punches a fist into his palm as he addresses the camera. MARK BATTLES: Yo, yo, it's Mark Battles, and I keep it fresh with Fresh Empire. The Fresh Empire logo appears with text over washed out footage of highways, and a chain-link fence. ON SCREEN TEXT: VOTE NOW FreshEmpire.gov/TheNewWave FRESH EMPIRE KEEP IT FRESH AND LIVE TOBACCO-FREE SWAY: Fresh Empire. Keep it fresh, and live tobacco-free.
